New logistic center for Audi with automated storage


In recent years Audi has launched production of more new cars than ever in Neckarsulm: six new models have come off the line at the site since the beginning of 2010. But more cars also means more parts. To meet demand, a new logistics center costing roughly €34 million has been built, where the handling of small load carriers can now be automated and performed ergonomically.

“The new building provides us with the security we need to ensure the supply of parts,” said Dieter Braun, Head of Plant Logistics at the Neckarsulm site. The many production starts and numerous model variations has nearly doubled the number of small load carriers in Neckarsulm since 2008, and that will continue to increase. An average of 1,300 containers will be handled each hour in the new automated small load carrier storage facility, known as the AKL.

The building is designed to conserve resources and is equipped with the latest environmental technology. For instance, waste heat from the utility supply buildings within the plant premises provides heating for the AKL building. Intelligent systems in the storage and retrieval devices – such as recuperation and drive switch-off – also help save energy. “It’s a good investment in the future,” Braun emphasizes. “We can cut up to 500 tons of CO2 per year this way.”


Construction of the new Hall A10 began in September 2009. The new logistics center was built on a 12,000 square meter (129,166.93 square foot) area in the east section of the company premises. Operation of the new logistics center was launched by Operational Logistics in October 2010. Employees in Logistics trained intensively in advance so they could adapt to the new process. This included technical system training with the equipment, operation of the lifting tables and instruction in ergonomics. During the phase leading up to the launch of the facility, which lasted several weeks, they supported the relocation from the manual storage facility into the automated facility and then supported the facility’s start-up phase. About 140 employees work in the new building.

The central incoming goods department for the entire site is now located at the edge of the premises. There, truck drivers unlock the gate with a chip and drive into a secure area that contains four parking spaces for unloading. 12 experienced employees at three control stations inspect the incoming goods, enter the new items or file claims for any incorrect deliveries.

Four robots lift most of the containers that need to be stored from the pallets directly onto the conveyor belt. The remaining material is received by the logistics technicians on adjustable lifting tables. “The employees used to have to place the containers into the shelves by hand,” explained Andrea Barth, Head of the new AKL center. “Today the workflow is much more ergonomic and more productive as well.”

The small containers, which might contain items such as control units, are stored by fully automated loops in the 19.5-meter high-bay racking units until they are needed. 15 fully automated rack feeders drive up to the 160,000 storage slots. The containers remain there for several days and are removed according to the first in, first out principle (FIFO). “The equipment is intelligent; it stores containers of the same stock at various locations so that if complications arise, there is no interruption in production,” Barth said.

The team is particularly proud of the fact that supply has been running smoothly with the new equipment since it began operating. Around the clock, the AKL center supplies all Neckarsulm production lines, which range from the A4 sedan, the A5 Cabriolet, and the A6 and A7 model ranges, all the way to the top Audi A8 and R8 models. The loop distributes the containers from the system on a rack trolley. They are placed in the trolleys, already in the correct order for delivery.

Audi RS4

The Audi RS4 quattro is the top tier and highest performing version of some specific generations of the Audi A4 range of automobiles. It is a sports-focused compact executive car (often called sport compact in some countries), produced by Audi's high-performance private subsidiary quattro GmbH, in limited numbers, for German car manufacturer AUDI AG, part of the larger Volkswagen Group. It slots distinctly above the Audi S4, as the fastest, most sports-focused model based on the A4's "B" automobile platform.
The original B5 version was only produced as a five-door five-seat "Avant", Audi's name for an estate car/station wagon. The second version, the B7, was released initially as a four-door five-seat saloon/sedan, with the Avant following a short while later. A two-door four-seat Cabriolet version was subsequently added. Furthermore, their unique internal combustion engines are all front-mounted, and are longitudinally oriented. The transmission is mounted immediately at the rear of the engine in a longitudinal orientation, in the form of a transaxle, and contains both a center and front differential.
The "RS" initials are taken from the German: RennSport – literally translated as "racing sport", and is the Audi marque's highest trim level, positioned above the "S" model specification of Audi's regular model line-up. Like all Audi "RS" cars, the RS4 pioneers some of Audi's latest advanced technology, and could therefore be described as a "halo vehicle". Furthermore, it is only available with Audi's Torsen-based 'trademark' quattro permanent four-wheel drive system.Its main market competitors initially included the BMW M3, and the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, and could also include the Lexus IS-F.
The original B5 Audi RS4 Avant quattro (Typ 8D) was introduced by AUDI AG in late 1999, for main production and sale from 2000, as the successor to the Porsche / quattro GmbH joint venture-developed Audi RS2 Avant. The vehicle, like its RS2 predecessor, was available only as an Avant (Audi's name for an estate car/station wagon), and was built on an existing platform, in this case the Volkswagen Group B5 platform shared with the A4 and S4. Retail price was around Deutsche Mark 103,584. The RS4 was available for sale in most of Europe, parts of Asia and in some Latin American countries.Audi produced 6,030 units between 1999 and 2001.
Although related to the Audi B5 S4, many of the outer body panels are altered, with wider front and rear wheel arches, to allow for the wider axle track on the RS4. With unique front and rear bumpers, and side sills, and sharing the rear spoiler from the S4 Avant, the aerodynamic modifications achieved a drag coefficient of Cd 0.34. Although the B5 S4 came in a saloon car body style, the B5 RS4 was only available in the Avant version.Luggage space, measured according to the industry standard VDA method is 390 litres (13.8 cu ft) with the rear seats in the upright position, and 1,250 litres (44.1 cu ft) with the seats folded flat.
For the powertrain detail of the B5 RS4, its motive power came from a modified version of the B5 S4's 2.7 litre V6 'biturbo'—a 2,671 cubic centimetres (163.0 cu in), 30 valve (five valves per cylinder) 90° V6 engine (parts code prefix: 078; identification codes: early version: 2000 ASJ, EU2 compliant, and later version: 2000-01 AZR, to EU3 standard).

Audi TT RS

The Audi TT is a two-door sports car manufactured by the German automaker and Volkswagen Group subsidiary Audi since 1998.The Audi TT has been produced in two generations. Both generations have been available in two car body styles; as a 2+2 Coupé, or two-seater Roadster. They have been built on consecutive generations of the Volkswagen Group A platform, starting with the A4 (PQ34). As a result of this platform-sharing, the Audi TT has identical powertrain and suspension layouts as its related platform-mates; this includes a front-mounted transversely oriented engine, front-wheel drive or quattro permanent four-wheel drive system, and fully independent front suspension using MacPherson struts.
Both generations of TT are assembled by the Audi subsidiary Audi Hungaria Motor Kft. in Győr, Hungary, using bodyshells manufactured and painted at Audi's Ingolstadt plant.
The styling of the Audi TT began in the spring of 1994 at the Volkswagen Group Design Center in California.The TT was first shown as a concept car at the 1995 Frankfurt Motor Show. The design is credited to J Mays and Freeman Thomas, with Hartmut Warkuss, Peter Schreyer,Martin Smith and Romulus Rost contributing to the award-winning interior design.
A previously unused laser beam welding adaptation, which enabled seamless design features on the first-generation TT, delayed its introduction. Audi did not initially offer any type of automatic transmission option for the TT. However, from 2003, a dual clutch six-speed Direct-Shift Gearbox (DSG) became available, with the United Kingdom TT variants becoming the world's first user of a dual clutch transmission configured for a right-hand drive vehicle, although the outright world first for a road car equipped with a dual clutch transmission was claimed earlier by a Volkswagen Group platform-mate, the left hand drive Volkswagen Golf Mk4 R32.
The Audi TT takes its name from the successful motor racing tradition of NSU in the British Isle of Man TT (Tourist Trophy) motorcycle race. NSU began competing in the TT in 1911, and later merged into the company now known as Audi.The Audi TT also follows the NSU 1000TT, 1200TT and TTS cars of the 1960s in taking their names from the race.The TT name has also been attributed to the phrase "Technology & Tradition".
The production model (internal designation Typ 8N) was launched as a Coupé in September 1998, followed by a Roadster in August 1999. It is based on the Volkswagen Group A4 (PQ34) platform as used for the Volkswagen Golf Mk4, the original Audi A3, the Škoda Octavia, and others. The styling differed little from the concept, except for slightly reprofiled bumpers, and the addition of a rear quarterlight windows behind the doors. Factory production commenced October 1998.
Early TT models gained press coverage for a series of high-speed accidents in Europe. Reported crashes and related fatalities occurred at speeds in excess of 180 kilometres per hour (110 mph), during abrupt lane changes or sharp turns. Both the Coupé and Roadster models were recalled in late 1999/early 2000, to improve predictability of the car's handling at very high speeds. Audi's Electronic Stability Programme, and rear spoiler were added, along with suspension modifications. All changes were subsequently incorporated into future series production versions of the car.Factory production of this generation ended in June 2006.

Audi and San Francisco Mayor Lee and Union Square Business Improvement District inaugurate Powell Street Promenade


Audi of America joined San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and formally opened Powell Street Promenade — a new and innovative pedestrian space in the heart of San Francisco’s downtown as part of a partnership between the City & County of San Francisco, and the Union Square Business Improvement District (BID).

The Powell Street Promenade has transformed two blocks between Ellis and Geary Streets, along the famed Powell Street cable car line, addressing overcrowding by creating an enjoyable public space to eat, chat and relax. It also provides visitors and residents with a comfortable place to plan their visit out of the bustle of the corridor. This vibrant pedestrian corridor is one of the busiest in the nation and is typically traveled by more than 100,000 people on an average weekend. The Powell Street Promenade is the largest ‘Parklet’ installation in the City.



“Audi is taking its passion for efficiency and sustainability even further with its involvement in the revitalization of Powell Street in San Francisco,” said Scott Keogh, Chief Marketing Officer for Audi of America. “This is an exciting and important project for the people of San Francisco and as a global hub of art and aesthetic, it seemed only natural that Audi – who remains steadfast in its commitment to progressive design and innovation – partner with the City of San Francisco to re-imagine this iconic area.”

Audi of America partnered with the City & County of San Francisco and the Union Square BID to provide the necessary funds and guidance on the cutting-edge and modern design of the Powell Street Promenade. Designed by Walter Hood of Hood Design Studio, the overall aesthetic of the promenade is guided by a forward-thinking, people-friendly, environmentally-conscious philosophy. By repurposing the on-street loading lanes along these two blocks of Powell Street, the Promenade provides six additional feet of continuous pedestrian space and adds amenities such as custom designed aluminum benches, planters, tables, rails, landscaping, bike parking, and other pedestrian-friendly features. Low-energy Light Emitting Diodes (LED) lights will illuminate the space through power collected from solar panels. All landscaping is drought tolerant and materials used are designed to be long-lasting and reusable. People utilizing this Promenade will also have access to free Wi-Fi; which was installed as part of the project. Audi used the same principles that define the brand’s innovative approach to car making throughout this process. The Union Square BID will maintain the Promenade and keep it clean and activated.

The Audi A1 e-tron wins Silvretta Electric Car Rally


Audi is this year’s overall winner of the second Silvretta Electric Car Rally in Austria’s Montafon region. The 2011 victory of the A1 e-tron follows the R8 e-tron’s win last year. The second Audi in the rally, a
Q5 HFC with a fuel cell finished in sixth place. A total of 32 electric vehicles were evaluated.

After three days, 307 kilometers and a total altitude difference of 11,541 meters, the A1 e-tron bearing the number 206 was named the winner of the second Silvretta Electric Car Rally Montafon. The event took place from July 7-9 as part of the 14th Silvretta Classic. The name Silvretta refers to a group of mountains in the eastern Alps of Austria. The Audi A1 e-tron won against 31 competitors in a rally, that was held on highly taxing mountain roads with inclines up to 15 percent, presenting a special challenge to electric vehicles. The Audi Q5 HFC, which was also entered by Audi, achieved sixth place. This was the best final result of all cars with a fuel cell.



The A1 e-tron contains technology that Audi’s development engineers are using to study the mobility requirements for such a future-oriented concept. The technological basis includes an electric motor with a maximum output of 75 kW that is powered by a lithium-ion battery. The battery features a 12 kWh capacity and can be completely charged in 30 minutes (quick charge), or in less than three hours (standard charge). It offers a range of 50 kilometers. To prevent drivers from being stranded by an empty battery, the A1 e-tron also comes equipped with a combustion engine, which can charge the battery as needed. The one-disc rotary engine (254 cc) is located under the trunk floor; it provides 15 kW of output intended solely to charge the battery, rather than to directly power the wheels.

The A1 e-tron is designed with a local emission-free electric drive system, which is ideally suited for driving in a city.


During the rally the A1 e-tron was driven by Franciscus van Meel, Head of Electromobility Strategy at AUDI AG. Long-time Audi employee Gerhard Gruber took on the important role of co-driver. “Sending an electric car into the Alps is one of the toughest challenges you can present it with. The fact that the A1 e-tron proved so impressive here is especially gratifying to me and it proves we’re on the right track with our electric mobility approach of combining an electric motor with a combustion engine . Many thanks to our dedicated team for making our second overall victory in a row possible,” said van Meel after crossing the finish line.

Van Meel then went on to describe the rally itself: “On the first day we drove cautiously and despite a distance of just over 100 kilometers we finished with a lot of electricity left in the battery. On the second day we were better prepared and we were able to win the day; on day three we came in second, and in the end that was enough to win the overall victory. The car ran flawlessly. We’re now looking forward to the 2012 rally. We already have a few ideas about the kind of concepts we’ll enter with, of course.”

Audi investit 900 millions d'euros en Hongrie

Audi va investir 900 millions d'euros dans son usine de Györ (Hongrie) et transformer le site en usine automobile à part entière. Quelque 1 800 nouveaux emplois seront créés.

Installé depuis 1993 à Györ, non loin de la frontière autrichienne, Audi Hongrie exécute le montage exclusif du coupé TT depuis 1998 ainsi que du cabriolet A3. Le site hongrois produit aussi la plupart des moteurs de la gamme du constructeur allemand et fournit des pièces également aux usines du groupe produisant des Volkswagen, Seat et Skoda.

Parallèlement à cette année, Audi a confirmé une garantie d'emplois pour ses deux sites allemands d'Ingolstadt et Neckarsulm jusqu'à la fin 2014. Audi est aussi présent en Belgique à Forest où est fabriquée l'A1 en exclusivité.

Audi A1 avec 1.4 TFSI de 185 ch

L'Audi A1, la citadine chic à succès, va pouvoir être commandée avec un nouveau moteur essence haut de gamme: le 1.4 TFSI de 185 ch. Une sorte de S1 avant l'heure, mais qui garde un aspect assez clean grâce à ses émissions de CO2 inférieures à 140 g/km.

L'A1 1.4 TFSI développe une puissance de 185 ch (136 kW) et 250 Nm de couple. Elle passe facilement de 0 à 100 km/h en 6,9 s, tandis que la vitesse de pointe est établie à un joli 227 km/h (chiffre provisoire).

Ce nouveau 1.4 TFSI sportif offre aussi de bonnes performances environnementales et économiques. Ainsi, il ne demande que 5,9 litres de Super aux 100 km et il n'émet que 139 g de CO2/km (là aussi, chiffres provisoires). Outre l'excellent moteur TFSI, ces bons résultats sont aussi acquis grâce à l'adoption d'une boîte de vitesse S-Tronic à double embrayage de sept rapports.

Assemblée en Belgique à Forest, l'Audi A1 1.4 TFSI de 185 ch sera disponible à la commande dés la fin de cette année au prix de 24 250 euros.

Audi Brussels boosté grâce au succés de l'A1

L'intérêt du public pour la nouvelle Audi A1 assemblée à Bruxelles est tel que la production a déjà été augmentée de 20 % pour atteindre 120 000 exemplaires en 2011.

Quelque 150 000 personnes ont déjà manifesté leur intérêt pour ce véhicule sur un site internet spécialisé, alors que les premiers exemplaires ne seront exposés dans les show-rooms qu'en fin de semaine a indiqué le directeur des ventes Peter Schwarzenbauer, cité jeudi par les quotidiens De Standaard et Het Nieuwsblad.

En Belgique, plus de 1 400 bons de commande ont déjà été signés, ce qui est "remarquablement élevé pour une voiture à bord de laquelle personne n'a pris place hormis des journalistes et du personnel d'Audi" a souligné le porte-parole du distributeur VAG en Belgique, D'Ieteren. Pour Audi Brussels, cela ne change que peu à court terme, a affirmé la porte-parole de l'usine de Forest.

Au-delà des 1 800 travailleurs et 400 employés en service, Audi a embauché 450 travailleurs intérimaires qui disposent d'un contrat jusqu'à la fin de l'année. Cinquante mille voitures seront produites cette année comme prévu. Audi portera la production de l'année 2011 de 100 000 à 120 000 exemplaires. Ce n'est qu'à la fin de l'année qu'Audi se prononcera sur le nombre de travailleurs intérimaires qu'elle engagera éventuellement sous contrat fixe, a encore précisé la porte-parole.

Silvretta e-Auto Rally: victoire de l'Audi R8 e-tron

L'Audi R8 e-tron engagée par la marque aux anneaux au Silvretta e-Auto Rally en Autriche a remporté la première place de la course. Une belle entrée en la matière et une belle démonstration pour la marque allemande.

La R8 d'Audi sera bientôt porposée dans une version électrique. C'est en tout cas ce que laisse entrevoir les concept-car e-tron, présenté en 2009 à Francfort, Los Angeles, et enfin à Détroit cette année. En attendant la présentation officielle de cette R8 "verte", ainsi que sa commercialisation, Audi a déjà engagé au Silvretta e-Auto Rally une R8 e-tron de pré-série.

Face à des concurrents (23 au total) qui étaient loin d’être des amateurs (on y retrouvait notamment la récente Tesla Roadster 2.5 ou encore celle qui s'annonce comme LA grande rivale de cet R8 e-tron, la Mercedes SLS AMG E-Cell), l'Audi a brillé par son efficacité, puisqu'elle a remporté la course.

Cette Audi R8 e-tron très proche de la production en série développe 313 chevaux et 4 500 Nm de couple! De quoi passer les 100 km/h en 4,8 secondes et revendiquer une vitesse de pointe supérieure aux 200 km/h auxquels elle est limitée.

La version définitive de cette R8 e-tron devrait sans doute se dévoiler lors du prochain Salon de Genève ou de Francfort en 2011. Une production en petite série est prévue à l'horrizon 2012.

BMW recently revealed his plans to make electric citycar Megacity, also Daimler smart model with ED. Then, if Audi does not drool? Of course, drool.

Therefore, the CEO of Audi, Rupert Stadler has confirmed that the German manufacturer will make electric city car in the next five years, as reported by Autoblog, Tuesday (03/08/2010)

Stadler says, almost certainly if Audi will also have electric citycar. Until now being developed, and Audi believe there is a time when electric city car is feasible marketed.

However, it remains unclear whether citycar electric Audi will be based from the concept of e-Tron A1 or smaller platform called Zero Audi.

"However, we certainly pleased to be joining with others to offer a battery-powered small car," Sadler said.
